Senior Optical Engineer |
The Senior Optical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of new optical coherence tomography imaging systems and products targeted for research and clinical applications. The engineer will work within and lead product development teams with specific responsibilities assigned for designing optical imaging and spectrographic subsystems, analyzing and optimizing end-to-end optical system performance, specifying optical and photonic materials, components and devices, and developing system test methods. Responsibilities will extend from product concept to transfer to manufacturing, with ongoing responsibilities in customer technical support. Significant interaction with product management and manufacturing are required.
Essential Functions:
- Design and develop optical platforms for optical coherence tomography imaging systems from inception through to manufacture
- Design and develop application-specific scanning optical front-ends for OCT
- Design and develop spectrographic subsystems for spectral domain OCT
- Design and develop high OSNR detection systems for Fourier domain OCT
- Optimize e existing designs for improved performance and reduced cost
- Develop component specifications, including lenses, filters, fibers, gratings, detectors
- Interact with vendors to procure parts to necessary specifications and to drive specifications to meet project objectives
- Develop and implement test systems for assessing system performance and image quality
- Participate in imaging studies and image analysis
- Apply solid system engineering principles to development process
- Manage robust and rigorous development projects from concept through transfer to manufacture, with managed emphasis on meeting system performance, cost of goods, and manufacturability targets
- Identify and mitigate risks in project outcomes, including performance, schedule, project costs, and system costs
- Prepare and participate in regular Design Reviews
- Routinely perform engineering tasks of high complexity while meeting schedule milestones and quality goals.
- Work proactively on process improvements tasks.
- Train and support other technical staff members while performing his/her job functions with minimal supervision and direction.
- Assist the sales/marketing team to support and develop customers.
Requirements:
Minimal Requirements: BS in Optics, Physics, EE or related field, 8 years experience. Outstanding analytical and problem solving skills are required, as are excellent communication skills (oral and written), ability to develop effective working relationships with various functional teams in a fast-paced setting and achieving timely results. The position requires the ability to be both creative and rigorous in approach. Specifically:
- BS degree and 8 years of experience in relevant fields
- Expertise in optical system design with Zemax
- Working knowledge of any of the following tools: Labview, Matlab, Solidworks.
- Strong analytical and practical knowledge of geometrical and physical optics.
- Knowledge and experience in free space optics, waveguide optics, spectrometers, imaging optics and optical systems design
- Deep toolset and understanding of optical components, devices and systems
- Working knowledge of the design and development of scanning optical systems
- Experience in interferometry
- Working understanding of polarization and polarization control
- Understanding of statistical methods and design of experiments.
- Solid understanding of product development processes, including all documentation for the product release to manufacture

Product Manager |
The Product Manager will be responsible for defining and delivering Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Tomography imaging products to Bioptigen's markets. The successful candidate will have a solid grasp of technology, the customer and the market, and will steer the product portfolio to high value, highly differentiated solutions that uniquely solve customer problems. This position will communicate with all areas of the company to develop and maintain the product roadmap, develop specific product requirements, manage product lifecycles from concept forward. The Product Manager will guide product launches and development of marketing messages, and will lead relationship activities with lead adopters and beta users. This position will serve as the internal and external advocate for the product working with sales, distribution channel and key customers to drive product awareness,trial and adoption.
Essential Functions:
- Assess product value-in-use from a customer perspective, and translate customer needs into product definitions.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative research with existing customers and potential prospects, as well as sales, trend, and profitability analysis.
- Identify, establish and manage strategic partnerships, including relationships with customers, suppliers and industry opinion leaders
- Determine clear and specific priorities for the development of new products and product enhancements by defining customer needs addressable with Bioptigen capabilities.
- Develop product specifications in collaboration with internal and external resources, including performance attributes, features, and cost and price targets.
- Develop and maintain business case for product lines and individual product initiatives.
- Lead and/or contribute to cross functional teams in development and of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging platform systems and associated software.
- Manage proposal development in coordination with production and scientific applications staff.
- Manage product introductions, including competitive positioning, timing, and risk mitigation.
- Develop and manage product pricing strategies, be a part of the team responsible for overall financial performance.
- Analyze and report on key business parameters related to product and business development.
- Contribute to short and long term forecasting.
- Act as business lead on cross-functional product development teams.
- Develop and implement launch plans that takes into account all aspects of the product, reimbursement strategy, clinical strategy, education, assessment of distribution channels, account targeting, budget analysis and sales capabilities
Requirements:
Requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through the successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree (B.A./B.S.) in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics or Optics, with an Advanced degree in a related technical field and/or Business Administration. Requires a minimum of 5 years product management experience with particular emphasis on system-level medical imaging products. Specific expertise and experience in Optical Coherence Tomography and Ophthalmic imaging strongly preferred. Understanding of research and clinical applications of OCT imaging desired, with an understanding of customer expectations, requirements, and work flow. Experience with/knowledge of regulatory and safety oversight desired. Experience in technical specification development, as well as financial analysis and business case development desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills required. Ability to establish rapport and earn trust across multiple groups within the organization and the external scientific community and effectively lead people to desired business outcomes.
