Bioptigen teams up to develop latest innovation for intraoperative OCT
March 14, 2011

The Brien Holden Vision Institute, Adventus Technology,Inc. and Bioptigen Inc., have teamed up to create a state-of-the-art intra-operative imaging device with the goal of providing a new standard of image resolution for ophthalmic surgery.

The intra-operative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) device will be developed by medical imaging firm Bioptigen, combining the knowledge of the anterior eye possessed by Adventus Technology and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute with expertise of Bioptigen in the posterior eye, to create software that enhances surgical precision.

Ms. Sylvie Franz, Deputy CEO of Adventus Technology Inc, says that the current, FDA-cleared Bioptigen OCT, the SDOIS, has the advantage of high quality imaging that is applicable to Adventus Technology’s revolutionary Dynamic Vision project. With its bright, high resolution images displayed in real-time the device could potentially have much broader application, including its potential use in the 18 million cataract surgeries conducted worldwide annually.1

Eric Buckland PhD, CEO of Bioptigen says that Bioptigen technology is based on the science of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), an imaging system similar in function to ultrasound, but using low-power light rather than sound waves. OCT offers resolution 100-times finer than standard ultrasound, suitable for analyzing tissue microstructure with features smaller than 4 micrometer. Bioptigen has pioneered a new class of in vivo optical imaging systems for biomedical applications, enabling real-time non-invasive imaging of ocular tissue microstructure, advancing critical applications in pre-clinical and clinical ophthalmic research and medical vision solutions to complement pharmaceutical, photodynamic, and surgical therapies. We are very excited with this great collaboration as we have the same inspiration to expand our clinical use product line.

CEO of Brien Holden Vision Institute, Professor Brien Holden, said that the innovation is an important investment in the future of intra-operative imaging and ultimately eye health worldwide. “This type of technology enables us go much further than we have before because of the quality of the image and the depth of information that it provides for the surgeon. He added, “...our business has been focused on excellence in vision health and eye care for 30 years and commercialization of products like this is an important area for us.”
